The company was founded in 1908 and is one of the oldest banks in China and one of the banknotes issuing banks in modern China. On April 1, 1987, the restructured Bank of Communications officially opened to the public, becoming the first national state-owned joint-stock commercial bank in China. Bank of Communications was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in June 2005 and listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in May 2007.
